Chile Postcard previews

A quick preview of some postcard I'm sending out from Chile. Don't know who is receiving what yet. I might just send them out at random. All these were drawn and painted on location.

I'm so happy with the way they came out that I'm having a hard time convincing myself to send them out :P, so i hope you guys like them!

Some new location Sketches

These were all drawn on location through out Chile, Most of them on my trip down to the island of Chiloe.

On another note, this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCJ8vbKcVgs)

Michel Teló - Ai Se Eu Te Pego is one of the top songs in Chile right now. I have no idea whats its saying since its in Portuguese (something about thats how you kill me) but its catchy as hell. You should take a listen.

The girls are cute too

Just some photos from the past few days

Cerro Chena, The main hill of San Bernando

Some other random hill to the south of San Bernando

My diet went out the window

The same hill, this time with more clouds

Driving down to the south of Chile, Dramatic Sunsets Galore

Saw this little guy in Valdivia, Chile, just hanging in the Harbor

The First Volcano i have seen in my life

My first legit Ferry ride in the middle of a storm, from Porte Montt to Ancud on the island of Chiloe (No longer on the continent of South America, its all island hopping from here)

No one i met in Chile made the connection that Kuky is Cookie spelled Phonetically

Climbing up Cerro Chena with some Mountain Bikers. The view from up here is amazing. You get to see all of Santiago and the suburbs, The shit loads of Smog, and the Andes mountains with some snow still left on top!

Wild Edible fruit EVERYWHERE. These grapes weren't ready yet

Juxtoposition

There is nothing like painting on location, seeing the local farmer pull his daily produce to the market with his cattle, and then seeing an Audi R8 Drive by. Followed by no more contact with civilization for while.

I also got a chance to see the Milky way galaxy last night in the southern hemisphere for the first time in my life. Tried to take a picture, but there is nothing that can recreate the feeling of looking up and just feeling completely insignificant, but at the same time completely lucky to be alive. Next time you find yourself hundreds of Kilometers from the nearest source of light, No moon, and no clouds, look up.

(not my pic) It literally looked like this to my naked eye

I should be posting some drawings soon!

Valentines Day

Found this in the streets of Santiago, Chile, in the BellaVista barrio. Which is the artsy neighborhood of the area. It has a real Barcelona feel to it with little Cafes, bars, and galleries everywhere. and the street art is everywhere!

Chile Trip: Day One

Tetris on my flight? Sweet!
It's currently the end of my first day in Chile. Overall a really good day, even if the plane flight sucked (something to do with babies non-stop crying and being right next to the bathroom). As some of you might have noticed, i really really been missing the snow this winter, and just as i left NYC on my flight, a decent snow show arrived in the city. I really wasn't looking forward to the 90 degree temperatures of Santiago. But as soon as i stepped out of the airport here in Chile, i changed my mind.
I really did not expect it to feel as good as it did. See.. the warm weather in Chile isn't Humid like it is in NYC, so it is sooo much more tolerable and welcoming than 90 degrees with 100% humidity back home. The only catch is that the smog was really thick today (i found out later that todays temperature was the highest of the summer season).

You can kinda see the smog here

A Location Sketch i did while on the flight. There was a good amount of turbulence, so this was a real challenge

For the first couple days of my stay in Chile, i'm hanging out in San Bernando. San Bernando used to be a quiet suburb of Santiago, but with Santiago's Sprawl out of control, San Bernando is now a pretty shady area to be in. Thats not to say there aren't nice safe areas, but it is highly recommended not to walk alone at night, and if possible to drive everywhere.

Enough sad stuff. The weather was amazing. Light breezes, not a cloud in the sky, and very quiet. Looking forward to trying to get some location painting done once i can leave San Bernando.

My Family's estate

You can kinda see a hill in the distance. There are hills EVERYWHERE. and few trees.

random airport waiting sketch

Tried to draw my mom. Decided to draw the things on the table instead.

PS: You can see a good amount of stars here.
you can make out the orion's belt constellation

An exercise in Minimalism

I always enjoy looking at how other people pack for their trips. Whether it is a weekend road trip, to a year long expedition seeing what everyone considers important is really interesting to me.

As of 7PM tonight i will be gone for 3 weeks roaming around Chile. Its summer there so luckily all the clothing being taken is light weight and doesn't take up too much space. The most important item i'm bringing on this trip for me? It would be the journal and sketchbook. i sometimes forget things which i shouldn't, and those two items when used plant me down and force me to take a mental snapshot of where i was when writing/drawing, the weather, the people around me, what mood i was in, and what i was looking at. When ever i look back at the pages of these notebooks i can tell you exactly what was going on when my pen touched that paper.

7 days of clothing

All fit comfortably into slightly larger than carry on size luggage.

This is the fun part. Paint supplies, paintbrushes, tons of pens, paper, ipod, camera, net book, sunglasses to look spiffy, journal, book to read, and some misc cables. These are the things which are really expensive to acquire in Chile, so im hoping i didn't forget anything.
I recently found and fixed a damaged Netbook. I installed Linux on it so that i can post updates while traveling (that is if i can find someplace with internet). I Also plan on doing the postcard project again. Except this time, since i'll be around family most of the time, they can easily guide me to the nearest post office and actually send them out!

Plane leaves in about 5 hours.

(And now that im going to the southern hemisphere to experience the end of their summer, it starts to snow here in NYC)
